Agentic commerce: where things really stand in 2026, and what a shop can prepare
Agentic commerce means purchases prepared or completed by an AI assistant on a customer’s behalf: it searches, compares, fills the cart, sometimes pays. Two protocols shape the field: OpenAI and Stripe’s ACP, and Google and Shopify’s UCP. At the end of September 2026, buying directly inside the assistant is not open to French shops, but agents already read your product pages. Here is what is real, and what is worth preparing.

The two protocols to know
ACP is an open standard connecting merchants with ChatGPT users through structured catalog data. The protocol does not guarantee access to a payment feature or eligibility for your shop. ACP.
UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol) was launched by Google in January 2026, developed with Shopify and backed by major retail and payment players. It standardises exchanges between an agent and a merchant’s system, over API, MCP or the A2A protocol, and publishes its capabilities through a /.well-known/ucp discovery endpoint. With UCP, a buy button can appear on eligible listings in Google’s AI Mode and in Gemini, with the merchant remaining the merchant of record.
What is actually open in France
Google’s AI Mode and AI Overviews have been live in France since 22 July 2026: French users already ask long shopping questions to an engine that synthesises the answer. However, paying inside these surfaces through UCP only concerns, according to Google’s Merchant Center help, products eligible in the United States, Canada and Australia, and selected merchants.
On the ChatGPT side, product search is available and relies on pages accessible to OpenAI’s search crawler; the product feeds merchants submit for free results were, at the end of September 2026, still limited to North America. Paid ads in ChatGPT are a separate topic, with their own feed, that I don’t cover here.
The practical conclusion: for a French shop, the useful work today is not plugging in a payment protocol, but making the catalogue reliable and readable, to be cited properly now and ready the day these features reach Europe.
Preparing a shop for agentic commerce
-
Accurate product pages
Price, availability, variants, dimensions, compatibility, lead times: an agent compares facts. A vague page or a price that differs from the cart loses the sale, and the agent’s trust.
-
Complete product identifiers
Brand, manufacturer reference and GTIN (EAN code) where they exist: these let your offer be matched with the same item elsewhere.
-
Product and Offer structured data
Full schema.org markup on every product page, including price, currency, availability, shipping costs and times, return policy. Many PrestaShop and WooCommerce themes only provide part of it.
-
A clean Merchant Center feed
It is the feed Google’s shopping surfaces rely on today, and the one UCP builds on. Errors and warnings fixed, stock synchronised.
-
Readable terms
Shipping, returns, warranties and contact in clear pages, reachable without login or script: agents read them before recommending a merchant.
-
Pages open to AI search crawlers
Check that robots.txt, the firewall or the host’s bot protection don’t block assistants’ search crawlers, while deciding what you accept for training.
-
Measure traffic from assistants
Isolate in your analytics the visits and orders coming from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot, to know whether the channel matters for you before investing in it.
Want to know what your catalogue is missing?
What about PrestaShop, WooCommerce and Shopify?
Shopify supports UCP natively: every store exposes an MCP server for shopping agents, and agentic features are managed from the admin when the store is eligible. Details are on the Shopify MCP page.
PrestaShop and WooCommerce do not implement ACP or UCP out of the box so far. The day a French merchant can connect, it will take a module or plugin that exposes the catalogue, creates the cart and receives the order according to the protocol. That is standard integration work, similar to the marketplace connectors I already build, see integrations and APIs.
Not to be confused: the MCP servers I set up on PrestaShop or WooCommerce are private access, so you and your team can query the shop with an assistant. They sell nothing to outside agents.
What makes a shop invisible or unreliable to an agent
- Prices or stock shown that differ from those in the cart
- Product pages copied from the supplier, identical to competitors’
- Variants shown only through an image or a JavaScript selector
- A robots.txt or firewall blocking every unknown bot
- Shipping and return terms missing or buried in a PDF
- No structured data, or structured data contradicting the page
