Shopify

Shopify isn't my main speciality, unlike PrestaShop and WooCommerce, but I work on it regularly: theme customisation, private app development, integrations via the admin API.

What's different about working on Shopify

Shopify is a closed platform by design: the core system isn't accessible, unlike PrestaShop or WooCommerce. The work happens through what the platform exposes: the Liquid theme language, the admin API, checkout extensions for the features that allow them. That's a constraint Shopify has chosen deliberately, not a problem to work around at all costs.

It also means some very specific requests, possible on an open-source platform, aren't possible on Shopify, or need a Shopify Plus subscription to be technically feasible. I say so as soon as that's the case rather than promise a solution that doesn't exist within the platform.

What I do on Shopify

  • Theme customisation

Editing the theme in Liquid, HTML, CSS and JavaScript, within what the platform allows.

  • Private apps

Building an app dedicated to your shop via the Shopify admin API.

  • Integrations

Connecting to an ERP, a carrier or a CRM, via the Shopify API or webhooks.

  • Migration to or from Shopify

Carrying over the catalogue and orders when switching platform, in either direction.

  • Fixes and troubleshooting

Diagnosing a fault in the theme, an installed app or an existing integration.

How I approach a Shopify request

  1. Checking what's available

I check what the Shopify plan in use actually allows, before proposing a solution that wouldn't be technically feasible on it.

  2. Choosing the right entry point

Theme, private app or admin API: the choice depends on the exact nature of the need, not a default habit.

  3. Development and testing

Working on a separate development theme, so the live shop isn't changed directly during development.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Shopify Plus for you to work on my shop?
No, I work across the various Shopify plans. Some advanced customisations, notably on checkout, need Shopify Plus, and I'll flag it if your request depends on that.
Can you customise the Shopify checkout?
Within what the platform allows for your plan, via the official checkout extensions. A fully custom checkout isn't possible outside that framework.
Do you build public apps for the Shopify App Store?
I focus on private apps, built for one specific shop, not on publishing apps aimed at other merchants.
Do you migrate a Shopify shop to WooCommerce or PrestaShop?
Yes, it's possible in both directions. Feasibility and complexity mainly depend on the data volume and the specific features that need rebuilding on the new platform.
Why choose Shopify over another platform?
I don't recommend one platform by default. Shopify makes sense if you want to hand off the infrastructure entirely and accept the trade-off of its constraints; PrestaShop or WooCommerce suit better if you need full access to the code.
