Back office and front office: what is the difference?

An online shop has two faces: the front office, which visitors see, and the back office, where the merchant works. Neither term stands on its own: each takes its meaning from the other, and many technical misunderstandings come from confusing them.

Two faces of the same shop

An online shop is one programme and one database, but two separate entrances. The front office is what the public reaches: the site's public addresses, the ones a search engine crawls. The back office is the admin interface, behind authentication, where the merchant and authorised staff work.

The distinction isn't decorative: it decides where to look when something goes wrong. A product page rendering badly is a front-office problem; an order list refusing to load is a back-office problem. Both can share the same underlying cause — a module, a memory limit — but they aren't observed in the same place, and a failure limited to one of the two faces is already a diagnostic clue.

What the front office covers

The homepage, category pages, product pages, cart, checkout and the visible customer area (login, order tracking) are all part of the front office. It's the part design, usability and performance work targets first, since it carries the buying experience directly.

It's also the only part search engines crawl: its structure, loading speed and content have a direct effect on organic search. Customising a shop's theme, whether a PrestaShop theme or a WooCommerce child theme, changes the front office's look and behaviour without altering how the back office works.

What happens in the back office

It's from the back office that a merchant adds or edits products, tracks and processes orders, looks up customer records, configures payment and shipping methods, or installs modules and extensions.

On PrestaShop, the back office is reached through an admin folder whose name is customised for security reasons (for example /admin123abc/ rather than /admin/). On WooCommerce, the back office is the WordPress dashboard, reached via /wp-admin, with a dedicated WooCommerce menu for managing the shop.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between back office and front office?
The front office is the public part visitors see; the back office is the admin interface reserved for the merchant. Same site, same database, but two entrances and two levels of access.
Where is the back office on PrestaShop?
In an admin folder with a custom URL, usually given to you by the developer, different from the default /admin/ folder to limit intrusion attempts.
Where is the back office on WooCommerce?
In the WordPress dashboard, at /wp-admin, where a WooCommerce menu brings together orders, products and settings specific to the shop.
Can a customer access the back office?
No, the back office is reserved for the merchant and authorised staff. Customers only interact with the front office, including their "my account" area.
Does changing the front office theme affect back office data?
No, in principle the theme only handles display. The catalogue, orders and settings stay managed independently from the back office.
Is checkout part of the front office?
Yes, and it's one of its most sensitive steps: a usability issue or a bug there hits sales directly, with no message appearing in the back office.
