I can no longer log in to the admin area

"I can’t get into my admin any more" covers four failures with nothing in common. Depending on whether the login page appears at all, and whether the password is rejected or accepted, the cause and the repair time change completely. Here is how to place yourself before asking for help.

Describe my issue Send a message

Four situations, four causes

  • The login page appears and the password is rejected: an account, password or lockout issue after too many attempts.
  • The login page does not appear at all, or returns an error: a wrong access address or an application failure.
  • The password is accepted but you are sent straight back to the login page: a session or cookie problem.
  • Login succeeds but the screen stays blank or shows an error: the failure is inside the admin itself, not in authentication.

The access address may have changed

On PrestaShop, the admin directory carries a random name generated at install time, and it is renamed automatically on every restore or file move. On WordPress, a security plugin may have replaced the usual login address with a custom one. In both cases the old address returns an error while the site itself is perfectly healthy.

Finding the right address does not require admin access, which is the point: listing directories over SFTP is enough for PrestaShop, and reading the plugin configuration in the database is enough for WordPress. It is often the quickest failure to clear, and the most alarming to live through.

When the password is rejected

Three causes come up, in this order of frequency. First a temporary lockout after several attempts: many installations refuse logins for minutes or hours after repeated failures, and the message does not always say so. Then a disabled or deleted account, which happens when a former contractor tidies up. Finally, more rarely, a password that really was changed — at which point the security question becomes serious.

  • The forgotten password process only works if the site can send emails, which is often the underlying problem.
  • A password can be reset directly in the database, but the hash must be produced with the algorithm the installed version expects: pasting a plain password does not work.

Frequently asked questions

I keep being sent back to the login page. Why?
The session is not being kept. Classic causes are a cookie set for an old address after a URL or HTTPS change, a mismatch between the www and non-www address, or a cache in front of the site serving a frozen admin page.
Can I change the password straight in the database?
Yes, provided you generate the hash with the algorithm the installed version expects. On PrestaShop the value also depends on a configuration key unique to the installation, which makes it less direct than it looks.
What if the site sends no emails and I cannot receive the reset link?
We go through direct server access. It is also a sign that the sending chain will need attention afterwards, otherwise your customers are not receiving their order confirmations either.
Can my IP address be blocked by the server?
Yes. An application firewall often blocks an address after several failed logins. Testing from a mobile connection confirms it in seconds.
How long does restoring access take?
Short, when server or database access exists. With no access at all, the host has to confirm the account is yours first, and that delay is not mine to control.
